Installing and Configuring Remote Access Server 2016
In this article we will show you how to installing and Configuring Remote Access server 2016, Remote Access is a server rule in Microsoft Windows server 2016 and Windows Server 2012 R2 that provide administrators with a dashboard for managing, configuring and monitoring network access. Remote access role is a part virtual Private network (VPN) it is going to protect your network connection or your remotely connection from one computer to another computer or client to server, in fact it’s going to connect your client computer to server machine in method protection, when connection between client computer to server machine in protect method, so client computer send any data or particular data to Server machine.
The Server role group together three technologies involved in network access: The Direct Access and VPN (RAS), Routing and Web Application Proxy.
- Routing and Remote Access Services –Users a virtual Private network (VPN) to support connectivity.
- Direct Access –allow remote and users within an organization secure access to file, document and other resources without the needing a VPN
- Web Application Proxy –supports end users access to applications from outside of a corporate network by using reverse proxy authentication.
Installing Remote Access server 2016
Installing remote access rule is the same basic process and installing any other role in windows server. In this case we are going to install remote access role in windows server 2016, you can install the role from server manager by using Add Roles and Feature Wizard. To install by using server manager, follow these steps.
Step 1: Open Server Manager either locally on the edge server that will host the remote access role or on a computer that has Server Manager configured to connect to the edge server.
Step 2: select Add Roles and Features Wizard from the Manage Menu. Click next on the before you begin page if it is displayed.
Step 3: Select Role-Based or Feature-Based installation and click next.
Step 4: Choose select a server from the Server Pool and then select the server that will host the role. Click next.
Step 5: On the Select Server Role page, scroll-down and then select check box. And then click next.
Step 5: On the Feature Window, leave the default selection and then click Next to open Remote Access page, read the remote access page and then click next.
Step 6: On the Role Services window, select which role services you want to enable on this server. Remote access provides seamless connectivity through DirectAccess and VPN, Routing and Web Application Proxy, choice and then click next.
Click Add Features if prompted by selecting a Role Services.
Step 7: On the Web Server Role (IIS) page, Click Next.
Step 8: On the Select Role Services page, leave the default selection and then click Next
Step 9: Click Next as required until the confirm installation selections page is displayed.
Step 10: Click Install, When the installation is complete, click close.
How to Configuring Remote Access Server 2016
Configure the Remote Access server by using the Routing the Deploy VPN Only option. (The Web Access Proxy is configured separately and is not dependent on which option you choose for this initial configuration.) So, in this case we are going to configure Remote Routing and Remote Access, to configuring Remote Access server 2016 follow these steps.
Step 1: Open the Remote Access Management Console by selecting Remote Access Management from the Tools menu in server manager.
Step 2: Click Direct Access and VPN under the configuration option in the left pane, and select Run the Remote Access Setup Wizard in the Remote Access Setup pane to open the configure Remote Access page.
Step 3: Select Deploy VPN Only to open Routing and Remote Access console as shown in figure.
Step 4: Select the server you are configuring and then select Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access from the action menu.
Step 5: Click Next on the Welcome page of the Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard.
Step 6: On the Configuration Window, Select Remote Access (dial –up or VPN) and then click next.
Step 7: You Can Set up this server to receive both dial –up and VPN connection, in this case select VPN on the Remote Access page, and then click next.
Step 8: On the VPN Connection Page, select the network interface that connected the server to the internet.
Step 9: If you are using DHCP on your network, select Automatically on the IP Address Assignment page or Select From A Specified Range Of Addressing to have the Remote Access Server using the IP assign the IP addresses of incoming VPN Connection. So, select Automatically and then click Next.
Step 10: On the Managing Multiple Remote Access Server page, select No, use Routing And Remote Access To Authenticate Connection Request. And then click next.
Step 11: On the Completing the Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard, Click finish to coming massage from the remote access, on the upcoming massage box Ok to close the wizard.
on the upcoming massage box Ok to close the wizard, it will open automatically Routing and Remote Access console.
Step 12: On the Routing and Remote Access console, double-click on the ports on the console tree to configure Port Properties.
In the Ports Properties dialog box, click a device, and then click Configure. In the Configure Device dialog box, do one or more of the following: to enable remote access, select the Remote access connections (inbound only) check box.
and you can set phone number for this device, and hereafter you can set a maximum port limit for a device that supports multiple ports. Click ok to close the Configure Device – WAN Miniport (SSTP) box.
From the Ports Properties apply and click ok to close Ports Properties.
Step 13: Open the Active Directory Users and Computers console by selecting Active Directory Users and Computer from the tools menu in server manager. Select the user you want to enable for remote access to connect to your VPN server.
Double-click on the user to user Properties, from user properties Dial-in, on the Dial-in window from the Network Access Permission Click Allow Access and then Ok to close User Properties, after that close Active Directory Users and Computer page.
Setup a Client to Connect to VPN Server
Step 14: Open Network and Sharing Center windows, Right-click on network from the left pane on start menu.
Step 15: On the Network and Sharing Center page, click on Set up a new connection or network to open set up Connection or Network windows, Select Connect to a workplace and then click next.
Step 16: On the Connect to a Workplace window, how do you want to connect weather you want to Connect Internet Connection (VPN) or Dial Directly, in my case select dial directly.
Step 17: On the Do you want to set up an Internet Connection before Continuing window, an internet connection is necessary for using a VPN connection, Select I’ll Set Up an Internet Connection later.
Step 18: On Type the Internet Address to connect to window, your network administrator can give this address, on the internet box type IP address or type the name of Active directory name, and then click on Create.
Step 19: Click on the Network connection from the taskbar, then click On VPN Connection.
Step 20: On the NETWORK & INTERNET console, click on VPN Connection and then click Connect.
Step 21: On the Sign in dialog box, you will need the user name and password, enter user name with domain name and type Password, and then click Ok button.
Step 22: As you can on the VPN console tree, VPN Connection is connected to Server.
Now it’s connected very will to VPN server, it means you client computer is connected successful to VPN Server.
Conclusion: as you saw we did installing of Remote access role from the windows server 2016, Remote Access was installed from the GUI, it was installed without error.
