FRSM is supported on all version of windows server 2016 and is supported for both full and server core installation. For server core installation, the graphical FSRM console is used remotely from another copy of windows server 2012 R2, windows server 2016 or a windows 8.1 or windows 10 computer with the remote server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed.
Install File Server Resource Manager in Server 2016
Windows server manager is the GUI way to install and configure the File server resource manager (FRSM) role on server, windows server manager can be used to manage both the local server and remote server, so in this article we are going to install FSRM from server manager in windows server 2016.
Step 1: On the server manager click manage and click Add role and Feature. On the before you begin page click Next.
Step 2: On the Select installation type page, click Role based or Feature-based installation, and then click next.
Step 3: On the Select destination Server page, Select the appropriate server, and then click next. By default the Hyper-2016.Hyper.com server has selected.
Step 4: On the Select Server Role page, scroll-down and then click File and storage Services and click File and iSCSI Services and then select File Server Resource Manager check box. In the Add Feature that are required for File Server Resource Manager?. Click Add Feature and then click Next. This task will install the File Server resource Manager Tool with include Windows remote server Administration Tools. As shown in figure.
Step 5: On the Feature Window, leave the default selection and then click Next.
Step 6: On the Confirmation Screen, check the Restart the destination server automatically if required option if you wish to do so, otherwise you can leave it unchecked.
When the installation process complete successfully, click close and go to server manager dashboard. Now we have the File server Resource Manager role and lets try to configure Files server Resource Manager (FRSM).
Configure File Server Resource Manager Server 2016
FSRM quotas allow you to limit the space that is available for a folder or volume. Quota can be applied to new folders automatically, or retroactively to existing folders. FSRM has quota templates that can be applied, or can be used to build new quota templates.
Configuring Quota Management – help Administrators limit how much space can be used for folders and volume and can also be applied for new folders and volumes.
Step 1: In server manager, at the top of server manager, click on the tools menu, on the tools menu scroll-down and click on File Server Resource Manager (FSRM). So, in the first We are going to create a new template.
Step 2: On the File Server Resource Manager window, Select quota templates in the console tree of the FSRM console and then click create quota template in the action pane.
Step 3: To start with settings of an existing template, select the template from the copy properties from quota template (Optional) list and then click copy.
Step 4: Enter a template name and a description template, select the template from the copy properties from quota template in the action pan.
Step 5: Click Ok when you complete configuring the new quota and it is available for immediate use.
Creating Quota in File Server Recourse Manager
To create a quota on a folder or volume using the File Server Resource Manager, right-click quotas in the console tree and select create quota from the menu. The create quota dialog box opens.
On the create quota dialog box, in this dialog box, you specify the following.
- Quota Path the root of the path on which that you want to apply quotas
- Create Quota on path creates a quota on that path, but doesn’t automatically apply the quota to existing subfolders of the path or on new subfolders created later.
- Automatically Template And Create Quotas On Existing And New Subfolders applies the quota and enable inheritance so that subfolder can’t be used bypass the quota.
- Drive Properties From This Quota Template Selects from a list of existing quota templates to use to define the quota.
- Define Custom Quota Properties Define a custom quota with hard or soft quotas and custom notification thresholds.
When you fill or select all dialog box, click Create when you complete configuring the quota. Finally you can see the reason on quota console, as shown in figure on File Server Resource Manager window.
So, now creating quota templates and creating quotas has been finished successfully, after that you can use it very will, it means you can use that volume or folder how many limit that you had leave or permission to that folder or volume. So well go to see that volume of folder.
In this volume you can see on up, it have limit, administrator or any users can be use on the limit and they connote use out of the limit, for example you had given 500MB on that folder or volume, for this condition any user can use it 500MB.
Configuring File Screen in File Server Resource Manager
FSRM includes the capability to screen files based on a file name pattern. This screen can be an active screen, preventing the files from being saved to a specific path or volume or a passive screen that is used to monitor only. The file screen functionality of FSRM is based on the file names of the files, not on their content. Although it is traditionally used to filter by file extension, it can actually be used to filter on any portion of the file name.
Creating File groups
You can modify an existing file group or create a new file group. All the default file groups are based on pattern matching of the file extension, but file groups you create can use pattern matching against any portion of the file name. Furthermore, file groups you create have files to include in the screen, files to exclude from the screen, or both. To create a file group, select File Groups in the console tree of the File Server Resource Manager console and then click Create File Group in the Actions pane to open the Create File Group Properties dialog box.
In the Create File group properties windows, in the file group name box, type Media- File or any name, then in the file to include box, type *.MP3 click add *.vob and *.wmv click add, in the file to exclude box, type *.docx or any file click add and then click ok.
Creating a File Screen Template
You can create a file screen template completely from scratch or by starting with one of the existing templates and modifying it for your own specific needs.
Step 1: Select File Screen Templates in the console tree of the File Server Resource Manager console and then click Create File Screen Template in the Actions pane.
Step 2: To start with the settings of an existing template, select the template from the Copy Properties From File Screen Template (Optional) list and then click Copy.
Step 3: Enter a Template Name, and then modify the settings of File Groups To Block, Active Screening or Passive Screening as appropriate for your new template.
Step 4: Specify any actions to take when the file screen is triggered.
Step 5: Click OK when you’ve completed configuring the new file screen and it is available for immediate use.
Creating a file screen
To create file screen on a folder or volume using the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM), right-click File Screens in the console tree and select create file screen from the menu. The create file screen dialog box shown in figure.
On the File dialog box, from the file screen path enter or type the name of file scree it means enter the name folder or volume. From Derive properties from this file screen Template, select from a list of existing file screen template to use to define the quota. After that click create, finally it will work very well.
Next, let’s test the file screen function, log in to you client PC, and try copy any MP3 file to Media File folder that located in the hyper server, you should get a pup saying that access denied.
